“Development Studies” is designed to help you gain awareness of all the issues involved in “development,” and to evaluate how “development” affects individuals, communities and the environment. The course encourages you to formulate your own ideas about all aspects of development - economic, environmental, social, cultural, spiritual and political and to think critically about the role of external assistance in development projects. An important goal of the course is to enable you to make informed decisions about the most suitable types of development for your own local area and even for Vanuatu; and to participate in the social and economic development of your own community. By the end of your course, you will be able to gain a better understanding of real-life issues relating to the quality of life in Vanuatu, the Pacific region and the world, and to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable you to make a positive contribution towards a solution for those issues. The Development Studies aims to help students and teachers develop a pride in their culture, entrepreneurship skills, pragmatic attitudes towards critical issues such as gender, inequalities, climate change and globalization, and a commitment to attaining the nation’s development goals.
